Emmetropia And Presbyopia in Grand Rapids MI
When looking at a distant target, light is focused by the cornea and lens, and travels a distance to the retina. Emmetropia is when the power of the system and distance to the retina coincide without the need for corrective lenses.
As targets move closer to us the light is pushed beyond the retina, causing blur.
The muscle inside the eye contracts, widening the lens, to focus the light onto the retina. This allows us to see up close. Slowly over time, the lens gets thicker and it becomes harder to change the shape of it. This is why we end up needing reading glasses, eventually.
